The purpose of Waterbury Rec Academy is to provide the community with a program that can provide (1) childcare during typical school hours daily and (2) assistance with remote instruction work. Due to the school district implementing a 1 day in, 4 days out of school instruction model, many families are left without crucial childcare. With the remote instruction delivered on non-school days, many parents have to double as teachers to assist their children with classwork.
This program will be held at the Anderson Field rec building as it has WIFI, AC, heat, running water, and a small kitchen, meeting the daily needs of children. The program will hold up to 15 children a day and will be staffed by two current college students, pursuing their educational teaching license.
Hours for this program will be 8:00am - 1:30pm, allowing staff to prep before and deep clean after. Children will have to clear our COVID health screening just as they do at rec camp daily. This includes a contactless temp check upon arrival, visual health observation from staff, and a few questions. Additionally, parents will be sent links to COVID quarantining protocols for out of state travel during their online registration. Children who are sick for any reason will not be allowed at the program until they are symptom-free.
Children will complete their schoolwork & remote instruction from 8am to 11:30am with help from staff if/when needed. 11:30am to 12pm will be lunch and then from 12:00pm to 1:30pm staff will engage the kids in physical activity and crafts (similar to the summer rec program). Children will be responsible for bringing a lunch, snack, mask as well as any electronic device needed for remote instruction.
Registration will take place online only, allowing parents to see which day(s) during weeks are available for registration. Registration is $25/day and payment is due at the time of registration. Registration is first come first serve.
The program will be staffed by our day camp director and early education major, Wyatt O'Brien, along with another staff who is also a current education major. Keith McKenna (pool and day camp director) will be available as our educational consultant (State of Vermont Educator License I, EXP: 6/30/2021).
