2020 Summer Day Camp registration opens Town Meeting day (March 3rd) at 8am. Camp starts June 22nd and runs until August 14th.

LOCATIONS
The new guidelines state that groups of 25 or less can occupy a classroom and in our case, the Recreation Building counts as a classroom. Each group, or pod, will have a max of 21 children and 2-4 counselors assigned, one being a Pod Leader. Each pod will have their own color theme with matching shirts and wrist bands given out the first week. We have split up camp into three areas to host each pod within state guidelines: The recreation building at Anderson Field will house one pod of children 6 and under; St. Leos Hall (located by the state office complex) will house children 3 pods (4 if needed) for children ages 7-9; Wesley United Church will house middle schoolers ages 9and up in 2 pods.

CAMP DIRECTORS
Keith Mckenna, our Pool Director will be joining the camp staff this summer as the K-3 Camp Director, while Wyatt O’Brien also returns as the 4-7 Camp Director. Alyssa Wilcox will return this year as well as our COVID Compliance Coordinator (CCC). All three of them are Lifeguard Certified and will be assisting with all facets of camp in order to ensure it runs smoothly and safely.

TYPICAL DAY
With the pool closed and camp separated into pods, day-to-day scheduling looks a bit different. Per state guidelines, pods won’t be able to interact with each other (no all camp games, etc.). Each pod will remain with each other from the start of camp to the end, with counselors staying the same throughout. Staff and the CCC will ensure any materials being shared within the pod will be cleaned and other activities are planned with keeping touch to a minimum when possible. Cleaning of host areas will take place at least three times during the day (beginning, middle, and end) as well as breaks for children and staff to wash hands throughout the day. Staff will be required to wear masks except for athletic activities where increased oxygen is required and they can maintain overall physical distancing (their mask will be readily available immediately once the activity ends). Children are recommended but not required to wear masks. In addition to a shirt, wrist band, water bottle, and snap sack, each child will be given a mask. Campers are expected to bring the mask with them for the duration of the summer and recommend it be worn, especially during indoor activities. We will be working throughout town to find walkable, safe field trips to attend as bussing is not recommended at this time. In addition to our recently robust training administered to staff, we will be adding COVID-specific trainings in order to make sure our staff are up to date with all the regulations and specifications as they arise. Our CCC will also help to ensure safety regulations are being followed at each pod through observation, inspections, and collecting and complying daily logs relating to health and cleaning. A typical day will look like the following:

-DROP OFF: 7:30a – 8:30a
During this time, campers will need to check-in at their designated tent (with their pod’s color flag) outside their host location. Here, a staff member will take the campers temperature via non-touch forehead thermal reader, visual health vitals will be noted, and any questions can be asked. From here, the child will head to their meeting area with another staff member. Parents and visitors will NOT be allowed to enter the facility at any point.

-POD MEETINGS: 8:30a – 8:45a
Pod meetings will operate like camp meetings, with staff review the daily agenda with their campers, going over any concerns or questions, and overall prepping the campers for the day ahead.

-ACTIVITY 1: 8:45a – 9:50a
Standard to last year, activities at summer rec include arts & crafts, athletics, and planned excursions (walks, science projects, exploration, etc.).

-SNACK: 10a – 10:20a
Snack will be in pods, either at an adjacent grassy area next to the host site or at the host site (designated pod’s room).
-ACTIVITY 2: 10:20a – 11:25a

-LUNCH: 11:35a – 12:15p
Lunch will be in pods, either at an adjacent grassy area next to the host site or at the host site (designated pod’s room).

-ACTIVITY 3: 12:20p – 2:00p
In lieu of the pool, this block activity will be focused on water play, in pods. We have a few different activities such as slip n’ slides, sprinklers, and river access (for play, not swim) for all locations to use (with lifeguard staff on duty). In the event of inclement weather or a pod is not able to use an aquatic area/activity and it’s a hot day, indoor or shaded activities will take its place to ensure safety.

-SNACK: 2:10p – 2:30p
Snack will be in pods, either at an adjacent grassy area next to the host site or at the host site (designated pod’s room).

-ACTIVITY 4: 2:30p – 3:50p

-PICK UP: 4:00p – 5:00p
Pick up will typically occur at the same area as drop off unless otherwise noted. The person picking up children must meet staff at the check-in tent. Parents and visitors will not be allowed in the building at any point.

LUNCH PROGRAM
We are still waiting to hear on the specific details of the lunch program. It looks like, as of now, there will be lunch available for anyone who needs it Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Children will have to bring a lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays (unless new details emerge from the lunch program). Lunches will be brought to the children at their pods who need them via camp directors.

PAYMENT
The final due date for camp payment is June 19th. You may either pay online by logging into your account or by dropping/mail a check to the municipal offices (ATTN: Recreation 28 N. Main St. Waterbury, Vt. 05676). If you choose to unenroll your camper, we ask that you do it by June 4th so that we don’t over order supplies needed. You will receive a full refund (including your deposit) if you choose to pull your camper.

The safety of our campers and staff is always our top priority and this current worldwide issue is something we take very seriously. I and my staff are frequently reviewing any current and new material released by the state and federal governments in order to stay compliant and provide a safe childcare option for the community. Pending any sudden changes in guidance from the Department of Health, the Governor's orders, or the Center for Disease Control (CDC), our camp is slated to meet or exceed the current state standards for operating and our goal is that the revised model of camp provides a fun experience while maintaining safety guidelines and practices.

There are limited week-only slots available at $175 for residents and $200 for non-residents. You may not sign up the same child for week-only slots and the full 8-week block- doing so may result in cancellation of all registrations.

Please reach out to me at recreation@waterburyvt.com or day camp director Wyatt O’Brien, daycamp@waterburyvt.com, if you have any questions. We are looking forward to a fun-packed and exciting summer at Waterbury Rec!
