STARFISH AQUATICS SWIM LESSON CERTIFIED ORGANIZATION!
The Town of Waterbury is now a proud provider of Starfish Swimming Lessons, a nationally certified swim instruction curriculum! Starfish Swimming curriculum is designed for students ages 6 months to adult and benchmarks are established at each stage of the program that include swimming AND safety skills. While you might not notice much of a change with our seasoned swim instructors, being a Starfish Aquatics Institute authorized provider allows us to certify our new swim instructors through comprehensive classwork and in-person training through our inhouse SAI Trainer, Heather Lessor. Adding this curriculum and becoming an authorized provider moves Waterbury Rec to the next level of water safety instruction and takes our standards for our lessons to a higher standard.

AGE 6 MONTHS – 3 YEARS OLD: 
StarBabies & Tots – formerly AquaTots
The purpose of this course is to develop a high comfort level in the water with young children, and an accompanying adult. This course does not teach children to become accomplished swimmers or to survive in the water; it provides an entry-level confidence-building, fun, and supportive experience.
 
AGE 3 – 5 YEARS OLD: 
Pre-K White/Red – formerly Per-K beginner
Pre-K Yellow/Blue – formerly Pre-K advanced
Designed to meet the needs of children ages 3 – 5, the course will develop a high-comfort level in the water and a readiness to swim. For swimmers who are developmentally ready, it will teach functional swim skills. This class approaches teaching swimming through creative, fun water activities, while working towards developing core competencies while achieving benchmarks at their own pace in a small-group setting. See Core Skill Achievement Stages (color-coded) in order to sign up for the right level.
 
AGE 5 - 12 YEARS OLD: 
Youth Red – formerly Level 1
Youth Yellow - formerly Level 2
Youth Blue – formerly Level 3
Youth Green – formerly Level 4
Students work toward the development of the five core swimming competencies using age-appropriate learning activities. Learning is self-paced but challenging. See Core Skill Achievement Stages (color-coded) in order to sign up for the right level.

AGE 12 AND UP: 
Starfish Stroke School – formerly Level 5/6

LIFEGUARDS
Each swim lesson is staffed by a Town of Waterbury certified lifeguard. Each lifeguard holds an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard certification with First Responder First Aid/AED. All swim instruction is overseen by Heather Lessor (Waterbury Pool Director).
 
SWIM INSTRUCTORS
Each swim lesson is run by a Town of Waterbury swim instructor. Each instructor either holds a WSI or an SAI swim instructor certification. Our lessons use the Starfish Swimming curriculum from Starfish Aquatics Institute (SAI) and are logged upon successful completion (or failure) of the lesson. All instructors are overseen by Heather Lessor, (Waterbury Pool Director).

PARTNERSHIP WITH BOLTON VALLEY
Through partnership with Bolton Valley, Waterbury Recreation is offering swim lessons winter 2024. Swim lessons last for 30 minutes, and have the added benefit of access to the pool for the entire day if families wish to stay longer. 

The swim lessons are offered as 4-week program with the intention to extend another four weeks. This is a new relationship with Bolton Valley and we are thrilled to navigate the partnership. 

ENTERING THE FACILITY
One parent is allowed in the facility with their child(ren). More than one adult may enter if multiple children are enrolled in StarBabies & Tots (parent and child lessons). Each swim lesson participant must check-in at the front desk and/or with Waterbury Recreation Staff.

FAMILY MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNT
Winter swim lessons do not have a membership discount as we are using a local indoor pool. 

*Cancellation Policy: Cancellations less than a week are not refunded, Cancellations with 7 and 30 days notification receive 75% refund, Cancellations with more than 30 days notice receive a full refund.
