LIFEGUARDS
Each swim session will be staffed by a Town of Waterbury certified lifeguard. Each lifeguard will be trained and/or already hold the waterfront module in addition to their existing American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard certification with First Responder First Aid/AED.

SWIM INSTRUCTORS
Each swim lesson will be run by a Town of Waterbury swim instructor. Each instructor either holds a WSI certification or is supervised by a current WSI. Our lessons use the Learn-To-Swim curriculum from the ARC and is logged with the ARC upon successful completion (or failure) of the lesson. All swim instruction is overseen by Keith Mckenna, LGI, WSI (Waterbury Pool Director) and supervised by the Director of Parks & Recreation.

PARTICIPANTS, COVID POLICIES & LIABILITY
Each lesson has a max of 8 participants per class (10 for aqua tots). Current physical distance guidelines allow for close contact for water instruction as the CDC states that there is no evidence that COVID-19 can spread to people through large bodies of water. Once out of the water, participants are asked to physical distance and wear a mask until out of the facility. Each participant signs a waiver during sign up that release’s liability in the event of injury or illness (COVID-19 falls under this) in order to participate in our lessons. Each participant will be made aware of the potential risks (via waiver), including illness, and will be signing up their children at their discretion. In the event of an outbreak, either in our program or at the facility (Golden Eagle Resort) with the public, swim lessons will immediately be suspended until further notice. Additionally, swim lessons are subject to change pending new orders from the state or CDC that impact the current structure of our program.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
Our weather cancellation policy is the same as it is at our pool: Lessons will be notified within a half-hour of the start time if they will be canceled due to inclement weather. Additionally, lessons can be canceled if inclement weather starts during the lesson. In the event of one cancelation (due to weather, illness, facility issues, etc.) we will not reschedule a make-up. In the event two or more cancelations, we will make-up with an additional Sunday session.

SWIM LESSON LEVELS
Aqua Tots/Parent and Child Aquatics: as the name explains, this course is for children under 3 and their parents to learn water safety together through games, songs, and support exercises.

Pre-K (for children under 5): students work on getting comfortable in the water (getting the mouth and face wet), introduces floating (on front and back) and is mostly taught through games. Pre-K Intermediate focuses on getting kids comfortable with floating in the water through water play on both front and back while Pre-K advanced focuses on recovery and introducing front/back stroke & freestyle foundation skills, also through play.

Level 1 (over 5): similar to pre-k students this course focuses on comfortability in the water working toward full submersion and the ability to float independently.

Level 2: works to hone the skills of Level 1. Students build confidence in floating, stroke techniques (front crawl and elementary backstroke). To move on the must be able to float on their front and turn to their back and continue the float as well as being able to move at least 3 body lengths independently.

Level 3: this course builds endurance. Works on submerging in deeper waters and swimming longer distances. Backstroke and breaststroke are introduced

Levels 4 and 5: these build even more on endurance and prepare students for the athletic world of competitive and fitness swimming
